FAQs

We know you’ve got questions about CNG, but we’ve compiled our top answers for you to get started.
If you’ve got another question, feel free to get in touch.

Is CNG cheaper than liquid fuels?

The retail price of CNG is $1.00 per litre. On switching to CNG, consumers will save:

– 87% of their fuel bill if they used premium gasoline at $7.75/litre.
– 85% if they used super gasoline at $6.97 per litre.
– 77% if they used diesel at $4.41/litre.

Is CNG cleaner than liquid fuels?
CNG does not contain sulphur, particulate matter, heavy metal traces, or toxic additives.

CNG burns cleaner than liquid fuels and leaves no by-products of combustion to contaminate spark plugs and engine oil. This translates into lower vehicle maintenance costs.

Is CNG safer than liquid fuels?
CNG cylinders are manufactured under very strict international standards and are subject to rigorous pressure and damage tests.

CNG is lighter than air and if released, rises quickly and dissipates reducing the risk of ignition. Gasoline vapours are heavier than air and will stay closer to the ground which increases the risk of ignition.

CNG has a higher ignition temperature than gasoline or diesel (600ºC vs. 320ºC and 285ºC respectively). For this reason, CNG vehicles are the least likely to catch fire under any circumstance.

CNG cylinders are equipped with safety devices which are designed to release the gas in the event of higher than normal pressure or temperature.

In a collision, CNG cylinders are much less dangerous than a gasoline or diesel tank due to the extra robustness, structure, shape and location in the vehicle.

Is CNG greener than liquid fuels?
CNG is more environmentally friendly since it produces 30% less carbon dioxide than gasoline and diesel.

CNG has an octane number of 125 compared to gasoline which ranges from 92 to 95. This can result in improved overall engine performance and efficiency.

CNG engines reduce noise pollution by running smoother and quieter than gasoline or diesel engines.

Are there any CNG fiscal incentives?

No Motor Vehicle Tax and Value Added Tax on OEM commercial vehicles (less than 3 years old and below 1600cc).

For Individuals – 25% tax credit on the cost of converting a vehicle to use CNG up to a conversion cost limit of $10,000.00 per vehicle.

For Fleets – Capital uplift of 130% for wear and tear allowance on the cost of converting a vehicle to use CNG.

For Installers – Capital uplift of 130% for wear and tear allowance on the cost of plant, machinery and equipment needed to provide CNG installations.

What is the current CNG station infrastructure?

Over 20 million Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) and over 25 thousand CNG refueling stations are in operation in 85 different countries worldwide. Plans are underway to significantly expand the network of CNG filling stations across Trinidad and Tobago.

Location of existing CNG filling stations in Trinidad:

Are there any macro-economic benefits of CNG?

Using CNG reduces the Government subsidy resulting from the use of gasoline or diesel.

Using CNG supports a growing industry in Trinidad and Tobago.

Using CNG lowers household expenditure and makes cash available for other important uses.

What are the most common CNG vehicle applications?

Worldwide, there are cars, vans, scooters, motorbikes, tricycles, buses and trucks either manufactured or modified to run on CNG.

Options for CNG in vehicles:

– Mono Fuel vehicles use 100% CNG with no liquid fuel backup.

– Bi-Fuel vehicles use 100% CNG and can also use gasoline which is stored as a backup fuel. This improves driving range between fills.

– Dual Fuel vehicles use a mixture of diesel and CNG at all times.
